What Is a Medical Imaging Career?

Medical imaging professionals are essential to the healthcare field. Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Assistants use various types of images to detect and evaluate a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions, including everything from dental cavities and broken bones to pregnancy and systemic diseases. Medical imaging is essential to help clinicians diagnose, treat, and manage patients’ health conditions.

Medical imaging professionals, such as MRI Technologists, Cardiac Sonographers, Diagnostic Medical Sonographers, and Ultrasound Technicians, use high-tech equipment and techniques to create visual representations of structures in the human body for medical diagnosis and treatment. These images include X-rays, CT scans, PET scans, mammograms, MRIs, and ultrasound imaging.

What Does an MRI Technologist Do?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) utilizes strong magnetic fields to produce images of patients’ internal structures. MRI technologists calibrate, operate, and troubleshoot the MRI scanning equipment. MRI technologists are also responsible for preparing patients for the procedure, including explaining what to expect and performing safety screenings to ensure that the patient and area are free from metal devices or objects that could potentially injure the patient or damage the imaging equipment. They also position the patient to create the optimal images.

What Does a Cardiovascular Sonographer Do?

Cardiac Sonographers play a key role in today’s modern diagnosis and treatment team of Cardiac disorders. Cardiovascular sonographers/technologists perform imaging scans on patients with illnesses and disorders affecting the heart and blood vessels. They may also administer echocardiograms (EKGs), which are ultrasound tests that assess the structure and function of the heart. Cardiovascular sonographers/technologists work closely with nurses and cardiologists when implanting stents, pacemakers, defibrillators, and fitting catheters in patients with artery blockages.
