At High Desert Medical College, our Phlebotomy Technician course (avocational) is designed for students who currently work or have previously worked in the medical field and are seeking additional skills/certifications to add to their portfolio. Through didactic instruction, clinical lab work, and hands-on training, students are trained to perform a variety of blood collection methods on adults, children, and infants using proper techniques and precautions, including vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin punctures, butterfly needles, and blood culture specimen collection. Students in the program will also be taught specimen handling, processing, and accessioning. The Phlebotomy Technician course places an emphasis on infection prevention, proper labeling of specimens, patient identification, and quality assurance.

Program prerequisites:
- High School Diploma / GED
- Provide evidence of six months of work experience in a healthcare setting
ACCREDITATION AND APPROVAL
The Phlebotomy Technician course is approved by the Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education in California (BPPE) and accredited by the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education (ACCET).
