Dental assisting is a career that offers growth and the potential for flexibility. While most dental assistants work full time, others work part-time or enjoy flexible schedules. Dental assistants are nearly always employed by dental practices, and work closely with a dentist. Working in dental practices, dental assistants can find work in any part of the country. No matter where you live, there is a demand for quality dental care. The growing demand for preventive dental services and the skilled dental professionals who provide them is growing as the country’s population ages, and more attention is paid to the link between oral health and overall health. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the demand for dental assistants will grow by 7% from 2019 to 2029, faster than the average for all occupations. During this 10 year period, this growth is projected to create over 23,000 new jobs nationwide. If you are interested in training for a career in a growing field, dental assisting is a great choice!
At High Desert Medical College we train students for success in this important medical field. Our hybrid learning model includes both hands-on instruction and online theory coursework, and students benefit from a combination of hybrid, hands-on, and online classes to teach the essential skills and competencies necessary for entry-level employment. In the Dental Assisting diploma program, students learn how to perform administrative and clinical tasks to support dental offices, including interacting with patients, assisting the dentist or hygienist during exams and treatments, delivering X-rays and taking dental impressions and fabricating molds or crowns.
HDMC’s Dental Assisting diploma program is designed to be completed in as few as 35 weeks, and consists of 910 total clock hours, including classroom instruction and a clinical externship. Courses include Dental Anatomy and Infection Control, Dental Assistant Procedures, Chair Side Assisting, Dental Radiography and Imaging, and Dental Practice Office Management. The clinical externship component provides students with supervised on-the-job training and the opportunity to practice skills learned during the program. Upon completion of the dental assisting program, students receive a Dental Assisting diploma certificate of completion and an x-ray certification, and are prepared to test for relevant industry certifications, such as through the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA).
