Right now is an excellent time to consider a career as a pharmacy technician! Over the last decade, pharmacy technicians have been among the fastest growing occupations in the country, and these essential medical professionals are in high demand nationwide (BLS 2020). HDMC has designed the Pharmacy Technician program to train students to meet this need in their own communities. According to June Vernon, HDMC’s Director of Student Services, “Pharmacy Technicians are in demand locally near our campuses. Pharmacies, like Walgreens, have been our biggest employers of our Pharmacy Technician graduates. It is a great career to get into because there is a definite need.” If you are looking for a healthcare career with plenty of opportunity and potential for growth, training to become a pharmacy technician might be the right choice for you!
Pharmacy technicians work hand-in-hand with licensed pharmacists, performing supportive administrative and clinical tasks. Pharmacy technicians are responsible for helping licensed pharmacists fill and dispense medications prescribed to patients by medical professionals. Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists in measuring, mixing, counting, labeling, and recording the correct dosages of prescription medications. These healthcare professionals establish and maintain patient record files, submit insurance claim forms, and manage prescription and over-the-counter medication inventories. Daily tasks may include receiving and verifying prescriptions or refill requests from patients and doctors’ offices, verifying inventory, processing medical insurance forms, and operating cash registers to accept payments from customers. Pharmacy technicians often interact directly with patients, and must adhere to HIPAA, Federal and State regulations concerning confidentiality.
