If you are interested in a hands-on medical career, in which you work directly with other medical professionals to provide patients with the highest level of medical care, then a career as a nurse may be a good choice for you. As a licensed vocational nurse, you can provide important medical care for sick, injured, or convalescing patients. Vocational nurses are responsible for many different tasks, including:
- Monitoring patients’ health
- Administering basic patient care
- Providing for the basic comfort of patients
- Discussing the care they are providing with patients and listen to their concerns
- Reporting patients’ status and concerns to registered nurses and doctors
- Keeping records on patients’ health
If you are ready to begin your journey towards becoming a licensed vocational nurse, HDMC offers an educational pathway to set you on course for a successful career. The first step is to complete HDMC’s VN Pre-Requisite (VN PRQ), a 4-week, 128 clock-hour, 100% online program. The VN PRQ introduces students to medication dosage calculation, medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, the interrelationships between structure and functions of human cells, tissues, and systems, and the effects of disease on body systems. Through the highly flexible distance learning format, students complete their coursework online, and submit all course materials through the student portal.
The Vocational Nursing pre-requisite course is required in advance of admissions for all students who wish to enroll in the Vocational Nursing diploma program. Once the VN PRQ course is successfully completed, students may continue into the Vocational Nursing Diploma program. HDMC’s LVN diploma program prepares students with the skills to provide basic nursing care, administer medications, document a patient’s signs and symptoms, and perform therapeutic and rehabilitative measures. The LVN program can be completed in as few as 56 weeks, and graduates receive a Certificate of Completion, Vocational Nursing diploma. Graduates will be prepared to test for professional certification as a Licensed Vocational Nurse, and included with the program tuition is the cost for the NCLEX/PN exam, BVNPT Application for Licensure by Exam, and the LVN IV Therapy Certification and Blood Withdrawal class.
Graduates of the LVN diploma program may also choose to continue their education and training with HDMC’s Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree program. Students who enroll in the AAS Vocational Nursing program complete additional General Education courses for a total program length of 101 weeks. The VN AAS program enables students to develop enhanced critical thinking skills, greater scientific knowledge, and quality verbal/written communication skills, becoming more well rounded professionals and more qualified job candidates.
HDMC’s vocational nursing programs are approved by the California Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technicians, and HDMC is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training (ACCET) and is licensed by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE). Accreditation and approval guarantees students, faculty and the public that the programs at HDMC meet objective and rigorous third-party standards of educational practices.
