Amber Hood, Veterinary Assistant program, HDMC Lancaster
Amber came to HDMC with the encouragement of her sister, an HDMC nursing graduate. According to Amber, “I decided to go to HDMC because my sister also attended HDMC and graduated from the LVN program. She was the one that inspired me and helped me find the VA program at HDMC which is something that I have always wanted to do. For as long as I can remember, I have always loved animals and have had a strong passion for working with them.” Now that Amber has found the Veterinary Assistant program at HDMC, she is flourishing in the classroom. Amber’s Lancaster instructor, Lauren Quarnstrom, chose Amber for the Featured Student Spotlight, calling her “Driven, Exceptional and Passionate.”
In her nomination, instructor Lauren Quarnstrom wrote, “I decided to choose Amber Hood because she wants to work in a Veterinary Hospital so bad she can TASTE it! She is one of my straight “A” students and she is always on time and attentive in class.” The instructor also noted Amber’s dedication, saying ”Amber has A LOT on her plate at home but refuses to let anything deter her from her goal of becoming a Veterinary Assistant and I admire her so much for that!”
Sharon Paterson, Veterinary Assistant program, HDMC Temecula
Sharon came to HDMC for the flexibility of the program, the hands-on training, and the supportive staff. Upon her selection for the Student Spotlight, Sharon praised the program and HDMC staff, saying “Being in the VA program is better than I could have hoped for. I love the flexibility of the program. The hours help you be able to continue taking care of your family or working while bettering yourself. You learn the theory of the vet world and then you lots of hands-on practice. The farm gives you lots of experience with farm animals. The staff is amazing, and they take all the time to know who you are, and it makes school feel like family, who help encourage you and help you complete your program.”
Sharon was chosen for the Featured Student Spotlight by her instructor Sarah Morris, who chose her for her positivity and work ethic. Calling her “Brilliant, Curious and Dedicated!” her instructor continued on to say, “From day one of knowing this student, (Sharon) has always had a positive outlook and a smile on her face. The determination and dedication of this student is unbelievable. This student has four kids, works a full-time job down in San Diego and fosters animals.”
At HDMC, students in the Veterinary Assistant program learn the theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on skills to enter this rewarding field. Through a combination of quality curriculum delivered by experienced faculty, and hands-on practical experience in on-campus labs and through an externship, HDMC students learn how to provide critical assistance and support to scientists, veterinarians, and veterinary technologists and technicians with their daily tasks. The Veterinary Assistant program teaches these skills, including exam room preparation, maintaining and sterilizing surgical instruments, intaking animals for exams, feeding animals ,bathing animals, exercising animals, restraining animals during procedures, caring for and monitoring animals after surgery or treatment, giving medications, and administering immunizations. HDMC’s Veterinary Assistant program can be completed in 35 weeks, and graduates receive a Certificate of Completion, Veterinary Assistant diploma.
After completing their program, HDMC graduates enter the job market with confidence, thanks to the support of HDMC’s Career Services department. High Desert Medical College is committed to assisting our program graduates in the pursuit of stable, rewarding employment, and the Career Services department provides every student with a wide range of career support services, including resume writing assistance, job searching and networking, interviewing skills, and comprehensive job placement assistance. While the school cannot guarantee employment upon graduation, HDMC instructors and Career Services staff consistently seek to assist students with employment opportunities prior to and after graduation.
