Surgical Technology AAS Program

At High Desert Medical College, our Surgical Technology Associate of Applied Science program in Temecula and Lancaster is designed to prepare students to enter a healthcare career. Surgical technologists work to provide quality patient care through functioning in a sterile environment and assisting physicians in operating rooms for procedures performed in hospitals, outpatient surgery centers, physicians offices, and other medical facilities.

This 62-week program provides students with intensive training emphasizing anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, microbiology, pharmacology, aseptic and universal precaution techniques, surgical procedures, patient care, and a clinical externship.

In the Surgical Technology Associate of Applied Science program, you’ll learn the skills to:

  • Monitor, assess, and provide for the needs of the patient and the surgical team intra-operatively.
  • Maintain a safe perioperative environment.
  • Apply aseptic technique and principles.
  • Use the instruments and equipment used intra-operatively.
  • Basic anatomy and physiology and pathophysiology as it relates to general surgical procedures and commonly performed specialty procedures.
  • How to function safely, effectively and efficiently while demonstrating ethical behavior in a surgical technologist role.

Students learn classroom theory online while completing hands-on training in on-campus labs. All students also gain valuable experience through an externship. The Surgical Technology AAS Program (STAAS) is offered at the Temecula and Lancaster campuses only.
