At High Desert Medical College, our Vocational Nursing Program in Bakersfield, is designed to prepare students to enter one of the fastest-growing professions in the healthcare industry. Nurses are critical allied health professionals, providing care for people who are sick, injured, convalescent, or disabled under the direction of physicians and registered nurses. This 56-week program prepares students with critical theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on skills through a combination of coursework and clinical labs. Students also receive real-world on-the-job experience through an Externship.

Students in the Vocational Nursing program learn how to:

  • Provide Basic Nursing Care
  • Administer medications
  • Document Patients' Signs and Symptoms
  • Perform Therapeutic and Rehabilitative Measures.

Graduates receive a Certificate of Completion, Vocational Nursing diploma. Students may choose to pursue an Associate of Applied Science degree by completing additional General Education courses (101 weeks total).

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics ranks Licensed Practical and Vocational Nurses among the fastest growing occupations over the 2019-2029 decade. Employment is projected to grow 9% - much faster than the average for all occupations, over the 2020-2030 decade.
