Course Overview
The Phlebotomy Technician (avocational) course is designed for students who currently work or have previously worked in the medical field and want to add phlebotomy skills and training to their healthcare experience.
Students receive classroom instruction, clinical lab experience, and hands-on training in a variety of blood collection methods.
The course includes 80 hours of classroom training and a 40-hour externship, allowing students to build on their classroom and lab instruction in a healthcare setting.
What You’ll Learn
Through didactic instruction, clinical lab work, and hands-on training, students are trained to perform a variety of blood collection methods on adults, children, and infants using proper techniques and precautions.

HDMC’s Phlebotomy Technician course is designed for students who currently work or have previously worked in the medical field and want to add phlebotomy skills and training to their healthcare experience. Applicants must provide evidence of at least six months of work experience in a healthcare setting.
The Phlebotomy Technician course can be completed in 5 weeks and includes 120 total clock hours. Students complete four weeks and 80 hours of classroom training followed by a one-week, 40-hour externship.
Students learn a variety of blood collection techniques, including the use of vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin punctures, butterfly needles, and blood culture collection methods. Training also covers specimen handling and processing, infection prevention, patient identification, proper labeling, and quality assurance.
Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and provide evidence of at least six months of work experience in a healthcare setting. Admissions can help prospective students understand the documentation needed before enrolling.
