Nursing Assistant

At High Desert Medical College, our Nursing Assistant program is designed to prepare students to work in this important healthcare position. Nursing Assistants are employed by extended-care facilities, hospitals, home health care agencies, and by individuals who want extra help when they are in the healthcare facility or in their own home. Nursing Assistants work closely with patients, providing basic care and assisting clients in attaining and maintaining independence.

This 6-week program provides students with intensive training emphasizing patient care, nutrition, safety, anatomy and physiology, asepsis, body mechanics, and rehabilitation and restoration care.

Students in the Nursing Assistant learn

  • Basic Nursing Skills
  • Measuring Vital Signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiratory rate)
  • Intake & Output Measurement
  • Recordation of Care
  • Client Interaction to Ensure Emotional, Social, and Mental Healthcare Needs are Met
  • How to Assist Clients in Attaining and Maintaining Independence, Respect the Person’s Rights, Privacy, and Confidentiality, and Respond Properly to Emergencies

Graduates receive a Certificate of Completion, Nursing Assistant diploma.

High Desert Medical College’s Nursing Assistant program is offered in a hybrid-online format. Students learn classroom theory online, while completing hands-on training in labs on campus. All students also gain valuable experience through an externship.

Many of High Desert Medical College’s Nursing Assistant graduates go to work in nursing homes and in private homes for in-home supportive service agencies. Our Career Services department provides every student with a wide range of career support services and comprehensive job placement assistance.
