ULTRASOUND TECHNICIAN DIPLOMA PROGRAM

At High Desert Medical College, our Ultrasound Technician program provides the critical theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on skills students need to be successful in this rapidly growing field. Also known as digital medical sonography, ultrasound technology is used in healthcare to produce images of internal organs, soft tissue, and blood vessels, as well as to observe developing fetuses in the womb. Ultrasound Technicians are trained medical professionals who specialize in using this sophisticated equipment. In this 84-week program, students learn to use specialized equipment and are prepared for immediate entry-level positions in the field through a combination of coursework, clinical labs, and access to the innovative SonoSim training technology. Students also receive real-world on-the-job experience through an Externship.

Students in the Ultrasound Technician program learn how to:

  • Verify patient history and health status
  • Operate ultrasound equipment, record and analyze findings in real time during the exam, and communicate findings with interpreting and referring physicians
  • Select and capture the best images, take measurements and make calculations
  • Evaluate tests and images relating to a patient’s condition
  • Communicate with patients and physicians as needed
  • Consult with medical professionals on patient results

Graduates receive a Certificate of Completion, Ultrasound Technician diploma, and are prepared to immediately enter into entry-level positions in the field. Students may choose to pursue an Associate of Applied Science degree by completing additional General Education courses (108 weeks total).

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects increasing growth in the Ultrasound Technology field as sonography becomes an increasingly attractive alternative to radiological procedures. The BLS projects the field of ultrasound technology will grow at a rate of 14% annually through 2020-2030, faster than average for all occupations. Many ultrasound technicians/digital medical sonographers find positions in public and private hospitals; others work in private practices, physician offices, medical and diagnostic laboratories and outpatient care centers. As an ultrasound technician, you may choose to specialize in a particular area, including Obstetric and Gynecologic, Abdominal, Echocardiography, Neuro-brain, Breast Sonography, or Vascular Technology.
