Update July 14, 2020

Dear Students,

We have been monitoring the COVID-19 situation and wanted to provide you with an update after today’s news conference from Governor Newsom. It remains the same as the original written Order from the Health Officer “Educational institutions (including public and private k-12 schools, colleges and universities) for the purposes of facilitating distance learning or performing essential functions (limited lab), provided that social distancing is maintained to the greatest extent as possible.”

All students attending limited lab classes, VN Clinicals and Externships unless notified from the site, “they are ordered to close” we are to continue business as usual. We can still meet with individuals on a one-on-one basis for new student enrollment or any other essential duties that assist in any new students in getting them prepared for online learning. At this point, our staff positions remain essential and you should continue to report to work. We are committed to your health and safety and are monitoring and following the directives coming from local, state, and federal officials. It is IMPERATIVE you WEAR YOUR MASK when you are around others. It is for the safety of others and yourself.

Students, thank you for your commitment and dedication to reach and achieve the Education Goals you have set for yourself. I sincerely thank you staff, faculty and the community for serving our students.

We are ready.

Update March 24, 2020

Ultrasound Extern students,

In response to the COVID-19 “stay at home order” issued by the Governor Newsome of California we have partnered with a vendor called SIMTICS to provide simulated ultrasound practice in many different didactics for externs displaced from site. Not only does the platform provide simulation but other resources to further your education and training as an Ultrasound Technician to better prepare you for your future career.

High Desert Medical College will be providing training for UT Externs tomorrow, March 25, 2020 in order to help set up access to Moodle, which is the learning management system that you will access in order to get to the Simtics Simulations. We are able to determine how much time you have spent in each training resource in order to give you credit for each week.

If you are at a site that is considered “essential business” and want to remain, you may do so. If you are uncomfortable, feel unsafe or don’t feel well, you may leave and contact us to inquire about the SIMTICS Externship products.

We appreciate your continued dedication and passion for education and look forward to providing a quality education even during times like these.

Best,

Update March 17, 2020

Dear Lancaster and Bakersfield, Students, Faculty and Staff,

We have been monitoring the COVID-19 situation and wanted to provide another update.  For those of you attending classes, we have been following the CDC recommendations for sterilization and cleaning of classrooms and labs and common areas after each use.

We have taken the data you have provided relative to your online readiness and we have started scheduling training. We are working to get our programs online and train the students on how to shift to an online learning environment by Monday, March 23. We need you to come to class the rest of this week to get trained to take classes online.  The online training schedule has begun today in Lancaster for VN students and for all our students in Bakersfield.  We will continue with conducting training sessions through Friday of this week to prepare students to work online. As I have previously shared with you, the new learning environment will be “Live Online” where the faculty and students attend the classes in an online environment together at the regularly scheduled times.  Rather than the faculty being in front of the class, they will be in an online environment with the students.

I am sharing again – If your area has access to the following internet provider see the following notice:

Charter to Offer Free Access to Spectrum Broadband and Wi-Fi For 60 Days For New K-12 and College Student Households, click here: https://corporate.charter.com/newsroom/charter-to-offer-free-access-to-spectrum-broadband-and-wifi-for-60-days-for-new-K12-and-college-student-households-and-more

IF YOU DON’T HAVE INTERNET GET THIS PROCESS STARTED NOW!

We will be prepared for theory classes to be conducted in an online environment beginning the week of March 23.

For labs, if we don’t go on any mandated lockdown, we will set a schedule for lab time during the time you are scheduled to be in lab with no more than 10 students at a time. Or we will move to online simulation for the lab experience.

Students in Extern for all programs except VN will not be disrupted unless the site instructs the students that they have cancelled. Then the student should contact their campus if they receive that notice and we will plan accordingly for their next steps.

All Staff and Faculty will continue working at the campus. We are also assessing their online capabilities to have them work from home should we go on lockdown, unless otherwise notified during this period.

We remain confident that we can maintain our institution through this COVID-19 crisis.  Thank you for your passion, dedication and commitment. We will be in touch as changes continue to occur.

We will continue to monitor and evaluate the status of the situation rigorously and communicate any changes via email and text. Please refer to this website for the most recent updates:

Dear Students,

Attention HDMC VN Students,

Starting Monday March 23 theory class will be held online. You will access your class via canvas each day. The link to the meeting will be in your assignments. Class time is the same as if you are in class.

Testing will be scheduled and timed in canvas. You must login on time to take the test.

Clinical for all students will be online. We have purchased Virtual Clinical Excursions which have been approved by the board. You will receive information about how to access them by Monday afternoon. These will include assignments that you will need to submit as part of the virtual clinical. All assignments must be completed. The board of nursing also requires that you will have competency testing when you return.

For term one students- you will have lecture only everyday for now. When you return to campus you will have skills only until we are able to get all the skills that had been scheduled up to date.

Remember attendance for class and clinical is mandatory even virtually and the attendance policy is still in effect. Do not miss more than 2 days and if you miss you will still have make up required.

Below are some guidelines of what you can do right now.

Wash your hands ─ thoroughly and constantly. Remind each other. Take pride in it. Make up silly songs that last the recommended 20 seconds so it won’t seem like such an eternity.

If you have symptoms including fever, cough, or shortness of breath, contact your own doctor as soon as possible.

Stay home if you are sick. If you are at school and feel sick, we encourage you to go home. If you are unable to do so, each campus has a designated sick room. Please ask your instructor about the location.

Avoid personal travel, is possible, to any place where there is community spread of coronavirus, including in the U.S., because if you do so, it may become necessary for you to self-isolate before returning to class to avoid unwittingly spreading the virus to our community.
